cooler. i will show you the numbers, coming up. we begin with breaking news in the east bay. another police shoot ng the bay area. >> alex savidge is live and there are questions about how one of the suspects tide. alex? >> reporter: we are not getting any official information from the police department thus far and we have confirmed there was a shooting from a hayward police officer. the car was trying to ram the officer. was we push down here on the street, it is still here beyond the crime scene tape. we are told the officer shot into the car. the car then sped off and crashed here. as you can see. one person has died here. this is now a crime scene at the intersection of d street on foot hill boulevard this morning, the person who died at the scene. we don't know that they died after gunshot wound. there was a second person inside the car who was transported to the hospital, we are told. this police shooting all began at 3:00 this morning.

it started a few blocks away on the 700 block of fletcher. that's when an officer there tried to make a stop on a suspicious car. it backed up into the officer and that's when the officer opened fire. >> i don't know what happened. it was about five gunshots. it is was like pou, pou, pou. and it -- pow, pow, and it woke me up. >> reporter: the secondary scene is still a crime scene. that's where the initial shooting took place. no officers were seriously hurt here and they are still not looking for someone outstanding. >> we have a call into the sergeant with the highwayward police department and as you can see, -- heyward police department. we are waiting to get more information on the officer-involved shooting in hayward. >> they shot and killed a

suspect after a while chase on highway 85 and through city streets. the officers gunned down the man yesterday afternoon after a 20 minute pursuit. the 25-year-old suspect first got their attention when he was driving around acting suspiciously. they pursued him and backed off and it was in a residential neighborhood. soon after, a second pursuit started. officers say he pointed a gun and threw items out of the speeding car. and women's purse. he drove with the blown out rear tire and rammed three police cars. >> i saw the guy laying on the ground so. >> there was like 30, 40 cop cars out there. >> the officers who fired the shots and they are on paid administrative leave. >> hours, earlier a daly city

man was a stolen car suspect. as we reported yesterday on "mornings on 2", they pursued the suspect into san francisco near k. and the passenger -- near candlestick park and the driver jumped out and ran with a gun. he pointed the gun at both san francisco and daly city police officers and that's when they shot and killed him. >> in overis night news. a car full of teenageers were on the run from the chp, officers tried to pull over the car. they suspected the driver was drunk. >> the vehicle eventually plowed into a fence. and there were five teens in the car and police say the injuries range from minor to serious. >> gill roy police are investigating a bar fight that turned into a stabbing near a popular restaurant. >> that happened before midnight. and this is on monterey street. >> a 36-year-old man was found

with stab wound in his back. he got into a fight with a man who was arrested for homicide. this victim was ira lifted to a nearby trauma center. they were ordered to to this. this is at wesley man more at hamilton boulevard in campbell. they provide affordable housing to seniors. it started on the high rise. and they were evacuated. everyone else was told to stay in the apartments. no reports of any injuries. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. >> happening now, authorities have called off the search for a florida man swallow he had by a sinkhole and now they are demolishing it as they try to stabilize the situation there. you can see the demolition is underway. you can see. they have gotten off the front porch of the house and pulling things out. right now. the hole underneath the home believed to be at least 30 feet

by 30 feet. and again, they do think it is growing. yesterday, firefighters gave the families of two nearby homes less than an hour to grab their things and get out of there. >> jeremy bush whose brother jeffrey was swallowed by the sinkhole. he said he is still shocked by everything happened. >> it is like i am still sleeping. it is not real. >> whoever would think you would get up and run to your brother's room and find a big hole in the floor and your brother is down in the hole. >> the crews say the ground is too unstable to try to recover the body of jeffrey bush. so they have called off the search. he was again swallowed by the hole when it opened up underneath his bedroom thursday night. >> they are testing the soil. and depending on the results of the test. well, they are going to continue the demolition as they try to get rid of the house and stabilize the situation out there. we will of course keep an eye

object that for you. >> one of the largest taxicab companies in las vegas went on strike early this morning. >> drivers for yellow checkered star transportation walked off the job. they are upset because the company had a contract rejected by 70% of the union members. it is reported that 400 cab drivers have turned off their engines and picketing has begun. >> one of the best try athletes is getting ready to swim from alcatraz. >> this is the 33rd escape from alcatraz triathlon. you are looking at video from last year's race. as they came out of the water. 2,000 people are competing this morning. this is what is ahead for them. after the 1.5 mile swim from alcatraz, they will get on the bikes and bake pore 18 miles and back to the water fronts.

hospital after injuring himself. he fell 50 feet to the ground. someone saw the accident and was able to call 9-1-1. he was taken to a hospital. six family members including two children were killed after a crash on a kentucky highway. yesterday, a tractor trailer rear ended a ford expedition carrying eight people. it burst into flames. killing the two adults and a the children. the driver of the tractor trailer is cooperating with the investigation. he is telling us, he saw the vehicle in front of him and he hit the brakes and didn't hit them in time. >> police say they are trying to determine why he did not notice the expedition in time to stop. two children did escape and they are in good condition. they will talk to voters about the sequester. >> pelosi spoke at a fundraiser

the spring convention wraps up today with the delegates electing a chairman. state democrats will hold the convention in sacramento next months. one of the republicans is is furious about a post targeting his wife. kentucky senator mitch mcconnell is the senate leader. they tweeted a disparaging remark of his wife. former secretary of stateally line chow. they they apologized for the tweet. this is yahoo's decision to end telecom muting. the move came after marissa meyer checked the virtual private network laws. they use that program to log in when they work from home. apparently it showed employees weren't logging in enough and that led to her announcement last week that it will end in june. they need a more collaborative

they will cut more than 46 full time positions at its annual budget meeting on wednesday. they must be notified by possible layoffs and the board cut 115 as part of the ban. this is causing confusion. the law prohibits schools for charging fees for classroom items and oakland at this times. and schools can't require children to bring certain materials from class. now, they are trying to raise money for field strips and school sun fries. >> they are not sure what they allow. and supporters say this is going to level the playing field for low income families. this boy was suspended after biting his breakfast pastry into a shape that the teacher thought looked like a gun. he is a second grader in baltimore. he said he was trying to bite his snack into the shape of a mountain. when they teacher saw his

directions this morning. it will be for some time as the hayward police investigate this shooting. i have a call into the sergeant hoping to get more information soon. we will bring it to you when we get it. live in hayward, alex savage, channel 2 news a man is facing charges for steal ago memorial for the two centers. santa cruz woman said they saw them get into the taxi. they followed the taxi and recovered the flowers. the man was identified as kenneth fray and he was booked for vandalizing a memorial and public intoxication this is confident and touching. santa cruz police officers discovered the teddy bear. on the chest. a purple heart with a note. purple heart is for the sacrifice above and beyond the call of duty.

belongings for 90 days. a house fire took the life of a 34-year-old man. they found him outside of his home just after 9:00 a.m. yesterday morning. he he had second and third degree burns over most of his body. he was flown to the davis medical center where he later died. investigateers say they think the fire started in the kitchen. >> massive wildfire in california has been put out and now the search begins to figure out what started it. >> it started thursday and burned more than 300 acres. >> crews remained at the scene to make sure it didn't flare up again. they were evacuated from their homes and one rv was destroyed. >> they were looking into whether flying embers may have sparked it. and a fast moving wildfire continues to burn at daytona beach. >> it prompted evacuations of more than 300 homes. late last night people were

shower, our air is so incredibly dry, temperatures notable cool they are afternoon, five to 10 degrees over what we saw yesterday -- or under what we saw yesterday. in the extended forecast, claudine mentioned we have rain and decent snow on the way. i'll break it down coming up. embracing news this morning out of solano county. c.h.p. is investigating a deadly crash on enter at a time 80 near the manuel campos parkway off ramp in the fairfield area. a car slammed into a tree around 8:00 this morning. the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. we're also following developing news this morning from hayward. for the third time in 24 hours, a suspect is dead after a bay area police officer opened fire. ktvu's alex savage is live at the scene where moments ago he talked to police. alex, what have you learned? >> reporter: i just talked with a sergeant with hayward police just a few minutes ago and he confirmed to me that an officer opened fire on a man early this

morning, and did, in fact, kill that man. i want to show you exactly the scene we have been showing you here all morning long. you can see investigators are trying to piece things together searching this car. the officer opened fire on that car early this morning, as it came speeding toward him. and we actually just learned the officer had a civilian ride- along with him this morning when the shooting happened, although neither the officer or that civilian were hurt. after the shooting, the car then sped off, and this is where it ended up, after a crash. this is the intersection of d street and foothill boulevard. the shooting, though, actually took place a few blocks away. it happened around 3:00 this morning, on the 700 block of fletcher lane. now that's where this officer, who had the ride-along with him, tried to make a traffic stop on this car that he believed was suspicious. but for whatever reason, that car sped off, turned around, and the driver then intentionally tried to run down the officer. fearing for his safety, he opened fire, hitting the passenger. >> an officer was conducting an

investigative stop. it was on fletcher lane, about a half mile from here. and during that stop, the driver fled intentionally, made several movements to intentionally drive at the officer. >> reporter: now after crashing, the driver inside that car, who was not hit by gun fire, hopped out and ran off. but officers moved in quickly and they were able to take that man into custody. and i am told right now he is being questioned by investigators. at this point, i asked the sergeant why they think this driver intentionally was trying to hit the officer this morning. he told me they had really no clear motive for the crime. we'll bring you back out here to a live picture, you can see this is a lengthy investigation that has been going since 3:00 this morning. they will probably be out here for several more hours this morning. the body of the passenger who was shot and killed by an officer remains still here on this scene. a lot more investigative work for hayward police to do.

[ sirens ] >> two san jose officers gunned down the man yesterday afternoon after a 20-minute pursuit. you're seeing some of that video now. investigators say the 25-year- old suspect first got their attention after he was driving around erratically. officers pursued him, but then they backed off because they said it behaved too dangerous to follow him into a residential neighborhood. however, a second pursuit got under way when that suspect was spotted again. officers say he pointed a gun at them and threw items out of his speeding car which included baseball bats and a woman's purse. authorities say he drove around with a blown-out tire as well, and also rammed three police cars. >> i saw the guy laying on the ground, so -- and there was

like 30, 40 cop cars out there. >> the officers who fired the shots are described by police as veterans and as standard procedure, they have been placed on administrative leave. now, hours earlier, a daly city police officer shot and killed a man who police say was a stolen car suspect. as we first reported here yesterday on mornings on 2, daly city police pursued the suspect into san francisco, into the area around candlestick park. and we are now learning that the passenger surrendered immediately, but the driver jumped out and ran with the gun. investigators say he pointed the weapon at both san francisco and daly city police officers, and that is when a daly city officer shot and killed him. in overnight news, a vehicle full of teenagers crashed in oakland while on the run from chp. the pursuit began around 1:00 this morning. officers say they tried to pull over the car because they suspected the driver was drunk. the vehicle eventually plowed right into that fence at west grande avenue and campbell street.

there were five teens inside that car. police say injures ranged from minor to serious. residents of a retirement community were ordered to shelter in place during an overnight fire. i began just before 10:30 at wesley manor near the intersection of winchester boulevard and hamilton avenue in campbell. wesley manor provides affordable housing to seniors. the fire started on the 12th floor. residents on that floor were evacuated, but everyone else was told to stay inside their apartments. there are no reports of any injuries. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. more than two dozen new san jose firefighters will report for duty for the first time this morning. the 31 new firefighters were hired after morning a year of station brown-outs and layoffs. an $8 million federal grant is paying for their salaries and benefits, but firefighters also took a 10% salary cut to help the department make those new hires. this morning, a demolition crew knocked down the home sitting on top of a massive sinkhole in florida.

a dangerous situation has also forced rescuers to call off the search for a man swallowed by that sinkhole. the work began early this morning on that home. we showed you live pictures earlier on mornings on 2. crews are estimating that the sinkhole is at least 30 feet by 30 feet. yesterday, firefighters gave the families of two nearby homes less than an hour to gather their plongings and evacuate. jeremy bush, whose brother jeffrey was swallowed by the sinkhole, still shocked by everything that happened. >> it's like i'm still sleeping. it's not real. who would ever think that you would get up and run to your brother's room, and find a big hole in the floor, and your brother down in the hole. >> crews say the ground is just too unstable to try to recover the body of jeffrey bush. he was swallowed by that hole when it opened up underneath his bedroom on thursday night. crews are hoping that the demolition of that house will give them a better idea of the situation in front of them. the world's best try

they're closing until jun 30th to protect harbor seals pmpg drake's is a largest aware in marin county. it's popular for kayakers, wind surfer, and divers. harbor seals gather within the area, and it's home to the largest breeding colony of harbor seals in the state. experts say visitors should say at least 100 yards away from the seals if they encounter them. the closure is meant to minimize the chance of people coming into contact with the seals. hundreds of delegates from 177 countries will meet in bangkok, thailand today to discuss trade protection for five species of sharks, specifically the ones hunted for their fins. a recent study shows 100 million sharks die each year from overfishing, pushing some species to extinction. sharks are fished for their meat, liver oil, cartilage and valuable fins. it's 9:21. big cuts could be on the way

welcome to mornings on 2. it's sunday, march 3. i'm claudine wong. >> and i'm mike mibach. crime technicians are at the scene of the latest officer- involved shooting in the bay area, the fourth since thursday. hayward police say it all began with the suspect allegedly backing his car into them. alex savage is live at d street and foothill boulevard, where alex just wrapped up an interview with police. >> police are confirming to us that a hayward police officer shot and killed a man who was a passenger inside this car, that we want to show you that is still within this crime scene, still a very active crime scene

out here at d street and foothill boulevard. a sergeant told me this car ran from a traffic stop and then came speeding toward the officer, who then opened fire. and we also just found out that officer actually had a civilian ride-along with him when the shooting happened. although neither the officer or that civilian were hurt. after the shooting, the car then sped off, and it crashed at this intersection a few blocks away, but the shooting was nearby on flesher lane. it happened about 3:00 this morning on the 700 block of fletcher. that's when an officer tried to make this traffic stop on a car that he believed was suspicious. the car then sped up and police say the driver intentionally tried to run down the officer. he feared for his safety and then opened fire, hitting the passenger. >> the officer responded to a threat, and you know, what could have happened differently is that the -- you know, the driver could have complied. and you know, followed the -- the directive of the officer, and not tried to run them over.

>> reporter: now, the driver actually ran off after the crash, but officers moved in quickly and took that man into custody. he's now being questioned, and investigators are really trying to talk with him and get a better sense of exactly why he tried to run down this police officer and the civilian ride along in the first place. bringing you back out here to a live picture, this is d street and foothill boulevard that is still a very active crime scene. this entire intersection blocked off, and it will be blocked off maybe for some time more this morning, as you can see, an active investigation, the coroner is here on scene, they'll be removing the body, and a lot more investigative work to do but still an active crime scene in hayward this morning after an officer- involved shooting. live in hayward, alex savage, ktvu. santa cruz police say a man is facing charges for stealing from a growing memorial to the two police detectives killed last week. on friday, santa cruz police say a woman reported seeing a man take a large bouquet of flors from that memorial and get into a taxi.

police and the woman followed that taxi, and they did recover those flowers. the man has been identified as 53-year-old kenneth mcfay. he was booked for vandalizing a law enforcement memorial and for public intoxication. the outpouring of support for the officers has been constant and touching. on thursday, santa cruz police discovered that teddy bear at a memorial for detectives. on its chest you can see there is a purple heart. also a note that read purple heart is for the sacrifice above and beyond the call of duty when one loses their life for the protection of others. it is believed that it was left by a veteran or member of the military. police are storing it for the officers' families. the memorial for the two officers is scheduled for thursday, march 7th at noon. it's held at san jose's h.p. pavilion to handle the thousands that are expected to attend. and ktvu will be covering that service live. our coverage will start at 11:00 in the morning, and we are also going to stream the service on ktvu.com. it was santa clara

county's biggest gun buy-back event ever. the sheriff's office says it collected more than 1100 firearms. most of those weapons turned in were handguns and rifles. they were exchanged for $100 each, but some focus also turned in several assault weapons, and they were given $200 per weapon. >> all of these weapons are good to get off the street. these are exceptionally -- because they'll take a high- capacity magazine. >> sheriff officials say the department handed out $114,000 during the buy-back and they did not run out of money and even extended the hours of the event. the buy-back was paid for by public funds from the county. meantime, solano county is getting ready for its first ever gun buy-back event. that's scheduled for next saturday, march 9s from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. it will be held at the solano county fairgrounds in vallejo. and similar to santa clara county, $100 will be handed out for each handgun, shotgun and rifle. $200 for assault weapons. today is the first sunday

cleaning of that encampment in san jose. tomorrow people who live on spring street near the airport will be given a warning. then 72 hours later, the city plans to start cleaning out the encampment. that will include removing trash and debris. and taking down any structures. they will also be storing property and belongings for 90 days. meanwhile police are investigating an overnight stabbing. that happened just before midnight near the long house restaurant on monterey street. police say a 36-year-old man was found with stab wounds to his back. they say he had gotten into a fight with three men, one of those men has been arrested. police are still searching for the other two involved. the victim was air lifted to a nearby trauma center. a house fire in hillsberg took life of a 34-year-old man. firefighters found troy vokel on the ground outside his home on west grand street just after 9:00 yesterday morning. they said he had second and third degree burns all over his body and was flown to u.c.

davis medical center where he later died. investigators say they think the fire started in the kitchen. a wildfire in southern california is now out, but now the search begins to figure out what caused it. that fire started thursday in the 4á678 arupa valley and burned more than 300 acres. crews remained at the scene overnight to make sure there were no flare-up. at the peak of the fire thousands were evacuated from their homes. one rv was destroyed and a home was badly damaged. crews are looking into whether flying embers may have sparked it. a fast-moving wildfire continues to burn near daytona beach, florida. the 1000 acre fire started there yesterday afternoon, prompting the evacuations of more than 300 residents. late last night, people were allowed to return back home. that fire is now 75% contained, but high winds and low humidity remain a concern. partly cloudy cool conditions in store for your afternoon. this morning, we're waking up with partly sunny, mostly

shutdown of the san onofre nuclear plant. now authorities are questioning what to do it with. the state of the plant will affect future energy use in the state with regulators trying to figure out how to replace lost power water rates are expected to increase in santa rosa and nearby communities. according to the santa rosa press democratic, the sonoma county water agency is proposing a 5% increase to cities and water districts that buy from the agency. the cost to individual households could go up 2.1%. the revenue collected would go to planned upgrades to its system. the rate hike will be debated this week. if approved, the increase is set to kick in on july 1. the red light camera days could be over for three bay area cities. according to the mercury news, hayward, redwood city and san rafael are considering ending their red light camera programs. this comes as the camera vendor, red flex is under fire amidst accusations of a $2 million bribery scheme. officials in other bay area cities say they're happy with their cameras and plan to keep

flashed a gun and tossed out items from his speeding car such as a baseball bat as well as a woman's purse. early this morning, crews demolished a florida home sitting on top of a massive sinkhole. the dangerous situation also forced rescuers to call off the search for the man swallowed up by the hole thursday night. yesterday families living nearby were given 30 minutes to gather their belongings and evacuate. nascar is looking at the placement of gates at its tracks nationwide, after a crash in daytona last weekend injured more than two dozen fans. the fans were hurt when a piece of kyle larson's race car ripped through a fence. two fans are still in the hospital. the crash has forced nascar to take a closer look at safety, specifically at their tension around the tracks. nascar is running in phoenix today and you can watch that race right here on ktvu at 11:30 this morning. wide receiver randy moss has caught his last pass with the 49ers. he left a message on his twitter page, stating wish we could have finished the job. thanks for the opportunity.
